Whitening my teeth at the dentist or via chemical has long been somewhat of a fear of mine due mainly to harmful side effects that I hear about. From damage to my enamel, increase sensitivity, irritation to my gums and development of a potential body dismorphic disorder, termed "bleachorexia"(1)- I have always wished that there was a more natural way to do so. My prayers were answered when I found out about a local company here in Vancouver called Kismet Essentials where they use coconut oil to organically whiten and brighten your smile. Super excited to try, I seek to test out their 14 day pulling kit and see if I can get the dream pearly whites that I was always destined to have. Since I have never heard of this method to whiten teeth before, I thought it was a relatively new discovery. However, Oil pulling or Oil swishing is actually an ancient Ayurvedic dental practice where oil is “swished” (kavala) or “held” (gundusha) for 10-20 minutes to get rid of toxins. This early remedy that originated from South India is believed to not only whiten your teeth but is also essential in improving your overall oral health and as a result your systemic health too (2). ::Before::::Results::What I loved about this rinse was that it was ALL NATURAL from the highest quality DME™, virgin, organic coconut oil and the freshest, fairest, and most future friendly type of coconut oil available. As a millennial, we are concerned with what we put into our bodies and something that is both good for us and the environment is a winning formula. I also loved that fact that the packets are travel friendly, easy to use and to store which makes it more wonderful to utilize. However, I did not discover the systemic benefits that it claimed such as clearer skin and balanced hormones. And furthermore, the swishing in the mouth for ten minutes or more is quite tiring but after many uses I find it to be a lot easier and more bearable. What I did notice was that it left my breath minty fresh after use and my gums looking a lot healthier. As for the whitening aspect, my teeth are visibly less yellow and a lot brighter but the process is slow and you won’t see results until well until after the first week. **Note: Please do not spit the coconut oil into the sink or toilet after use as it will clog up the drains once it hardens. Spit into a trash bin as directed and store it in a dark cool place. I also want to introduce this beautiful kimonette that I love wearing to Oil Pull by another local company called Smash & Tess. Designed and produced in North America, their premium line of dreamwear encourages women to feel confident while relaxing, indulging and re-imagining your day. This silky, tropical, flirty and fun floral print robe is especially perfect for a lazy weekend to watch Netflix, beautifying or even as gifts for your bridal party which I am sure they will appreciate and love. A Special Thanks to Kismet Essentials and Smash & Tess for partnering up with me on this post and I hope in the future I can introduce more great Vancouver companies to you!
