One of those events you will probably attend the most this holiday season will probably be the cocktail party! Ranging anywhere from a swanky society soiree, work function at a fancy restaurant or even a low-key gathering at a friend’s house (1), cocktail hour will definitely take up most of your December schedule. Wherever such a party is held, dressing for an occasion that really has no dress code can be difficult. For the most part, we can assume that these types of events are “dressy casual” where you should dress up a bit from the usual. To negate the event that you may be dramatically over or under dressed (2), I suggest the classic LBD or Little Black Dress but spiced up with a little green to achieve just the right amount of envy from the crowd.
To inspire my celebratory mood, my husband and mother-in-law came with me to visit a historic village museum that I frequented often during elementary. This was always a favourite place to visit during Christmas because it was fun, beautifully decorated and home to a vintage carousel. Impeccably restored, this antique carousel was a flawless location to express the holiday spirit! With the merry aplomb now fully intact, I thought the easiest way to achieve a transition from work-to-party would be to wear a sophisticated yet comfortable Little Black Dress to work. I love this sleeveless LBD because even though it is black it has interesting chevron panels that add intrigue while keeping it classic and work appropriate. Having something simple underneath will be highly efficient because you can add drama with your outerwear later; for example, like with this military inspired green wool coat. Super festive and elegant, this coat will help elevate your outfit from boring to unexpected and chic. Perfect for those on-the-go moments where you have to go straight from work to party, this allows you to be comfortable and feel #likeaboss while enjoying a cocktail or two! (3)
Some might say it is boring to wear black during the holidays; however if you pile on interesting and unexpected accessories the look will turn from yawn to yay in a second! For example, a must-have in your jewellery arsenal for this season is this Zara necklace composed of zinc glass, acrylic and steel (4) with hints of green and mauve tone crystals. A true fashion steal, this necklace with its classic shape and stones will certainly upgrade your black ensemble into something swoon worthy. To make the outfit even more festive, add a rose tone metallic clutch and thigh-high suede black boots to keep warm with just the right amount of sex appeal. Nothing is sexier than being comfortable in your own clothes and skin and this look will definitely help you achieve all the right check marks without crossing any wrong lines.
As I eagerly awaited to ride the carousel, I saw how excited my mother-in-law because it was her first time since she was a child that she rode it. With the wide smile that radiated off her face, I realized that the holidays aren’t just for kids but a time where we all should reminisce, get excited and have fun on the merry-go-round. Until next time stay glam, chic and merry - xoxo Spirit
