Welcome to February and the month of Fashion Week! Other than the exquisite runways shows and beautiful couture gowns, what I love most about fashion week is the street style outside. With the haute couture shows ending in Paris, I was fully inspired by the beautiful photos shot by Phil Oh and I was especially drawn to Russian editor and streetstyle star Miroslava Duma. Always impeccably dressed, she paired a white wool duster coat with jeans and a chic black beret that added a much needed Parisian touch to a lost tradition. Boldly claimed by one Parisienne that the beret is a "myth", I was shocked to read that in Paris, the beret is considered a "cliché". In contrary to those beliefs, I have always seen the beret as a signature nod to French culture and an elegant winter accessory that paired well with everything. Not fazed by that comment, I seek to revive this "eccentric chapeau" (1) and return it to its former fashion glory.
When I saw the colorful beret on the Gucci runway, I was inspired to get one this season and pair it in a more casual way. Sometimes, I do agree that it can look too much like a costume if you do a "Parisian-style” shoot that includes beret, a trench, a marinière shirt, a cigarette, and a red lip (4). But instead, of channeling the full French look, we should incorporate it just like we would with a beanie or fedora in our daily lives to make it seem more authentic and less like a themed photo shoot.
Style Tip: For an easy weekend look to get some brunch or to browse through the museum, I suggest wearing the beret with the everyday denim overall dress to keep it casual yet feminine. I also wore a navy turtleneck, a navy classic quilted lambskin Chanel purse and black ankle booties to keep the colours monochromatic so the burgundy can really shine. Instead of heavy jewelry, I added these mixed-matched earrings from the summer and two ornate antique pins on both side for a unexpected twist on my take of Parisienne chic.
Simple yet elegant, this look is a sweet and cozy option to refresh your winter woes (5) by adding a dash of French and colour. Until next time stay chic and glam!
