Culottes are everywhere this fall and it is undeniable that they are the "trouser of the moment". However, when people hear "Culottes" they instantly become fearful of a pant that resembles a midi skirt that is slightly oversized and cropped. Seemingly difficult to pull off at first, I wanted to challenge this borrowed-from-the-boys look and tackle this trend with an oversized confidence.
Originally worn by upper-class gentlemen in the late Middle Ages, the culotte has since shifted to become a liberating trend for women (1). With such a history, I feel as if they deserve more attention than is given. This is mainly due to the fact that they can seem sloppy because they are loose-fitting. However, if you styled it the right way it can be just as versatile as your everyday denim(2). The solution is to embrace the fact that the look is suppose to look a little loose because menswear is suppose to be comfortable. Since styling menswear is really all about working with contrast and proportions (3), I wanted to give the look more structure by adding a asymmetric white dress shirt and oversize checked blazer. I adore this blazer because it feels so English and ties in nicely with the culottes European heritage. I also didn’t tailor my denim culottes because I wanted a more masculine and fierce approach to this innately feminist style (4).
Since the borrowing-from-the-boys aesthetic is all about adding feminine touches, I used my favourite pieces from Olivia Palermo x Baublebars collection to create a distinctive juxtaposition. For example, unlike this post where I pinned my brooches on each collar, I only did it to one side for a powerful statement. Also to bring the look into contemporary times, I added my new black ankle suede booties, luxe fur stole and used my vintage cosmetic pouch as a clutch.
Perfect for visiting the art gallery, local museum or boardroom, this inspired-by -the -boys look will surely help you walk in with abundance in confidence and stride . Thanks for reading and until next time stay glam and chic- xoxo Spirit.
