If you have ever visited Vancouver, Canada you will know that our city rains pretty much all year around, except this summer which was crazy dry. But I think the rain is what makes the city beautiful and the trees lush and green. However, like any Vancouverite, I struggle to keep dry without sacrificing style. Having to find what to wear on a rainy day can be tough but not impossible. Dressing well requires advance planning (1) and a sturdy black umbrella.
I think the usual rainy day fashion tips would say that you should add colour to brighten up your day (2). In contrast, I like to play with the mood of the weather and chose this black and grey for today's ensemble instead. Since it was cold and we were heading downtown for a friends surprise birthday party, I wanted to look polish while staying dry and warm. I wore a grey structured blazer over a a sheer polka dot shirt and coated black denim to keep it sophisticated yet fun. I like the grey blazer because when wet, it blends in with the rain and dries quickly and adds just a hint of color to the mood. I also like to roll up the sleeves to give it that nonchalance. Coated denim is great to wear because it is rainproof and looks like leather but not. It can be washed in delicate mode in your laundry machine and doesn't take a huge bite out of your wallet.
For accessories, I wanted to add just a hint of retro with the long black skinny scarf and the polka shirt. I also wanted some drama, so I incorporated a sexy fringe clutch for those lovely evenings, a pave gunmetal snake ring and long fringe earrings to match. These types of earrings are called mix-matched, where the two are distinctively different, like size and shape (3). I suggest, wearing a stud on one ear and something long on the other. As long as they are a similar color and element, it will look cohesive (4) and not like you are wearing the wrong thing. These Zara earrings also comes with a cuff so you can wear it many ways to match whatever mood you like. My previous post (link below) shows you another way on how you can wear them. To compete the look, I like these simple black leather pumps to repel the rain and to stay true to the poise of the outfit.
Thanks for reading and I hope you gain some ideas on styling the perfect rainy day downtown look.
