In January, I did a review on the Gwen Stefani x Urban Decay eyeshadow palette and raved about the lipstick samples that came along with the palette. I was so impressed with their creamy, pigmented and velvety texture that I decided to get a few when the entire collection came out. With an array of reds, a neutral and a vibrant magenta purple to choose from, you have no excuse but to bring out your inner Gwen and rock her signature bold lip.
Whether you are red lip maven or a neutral girl, there is something for every girl in this collection. With that said, the biggest complaint I have come across so far is the lack of colour variations in the collection. Since the collection is set to mimic Gwen's off and on stage persona, a predominantly red collection should be expected. Again "inspired by her love of black-and-white graphic prints and antique gold accents" (2), the case is luxuriously embossed in black and gold that swivels all the way to the bottom in an interesting way to help you secure your lipstick and not smudge on the cap. I hate it when lipsticks are poorly packaged because it ruins the lipstick and I am glad that Urban Decay and Gwen paid attention to every little detail.
Fully equipped with all you need to recreate Gwen Stefani's signature style and look, these 8 lipsticks with 2 shades you can only get on the UD website (Plaid & Phonecall) will become some of your favourites. Below are five or the shades I got from Sephora along with four matching lip pencils when it was released on Janurary 29.
Rock Steady: What I wore for this Valentine's Day look and the darkest shade, Rock Steady an be described as a deep wine red cream that is perfect for creating a sexy vampy lip.
Ex-Girlfriend: A sheer nude rose with pink shimmer, this lipstick is best on top of other colours like Rock Steady where it acts like a lip gloss to give your a fuller pout and to add shine.
Wonderland: Such a pretty colour, I would say this one is between a pink and red. Very girly and feminine, I wore this colour for my chic beret look.
Spiderweb: A satin finish with blue undertones, I would say this is Gwen signature trademark red.
Firebird: Even though it looks like a dark purple it applies on like a fuchsia with a great colour pay-off and creamy texture. So fun and unique, I wore this for my polette shoot and absolutely loved it!
My favourite shades are Rock Steady, Wonderland and Firebird but I was really disappointed with Ex-Girlfriend because it was simply too sheer on its own and was the wrong nude for my lips. I would only recommend you get this shade if you want to mute Rock Steady for a day time casual look and create a nice glossy effect for fuller looking lips. I really like Spiderweb but it is a classic that many would have in their makeup arsenal, so I would skip it if you already have a favourite go-to red. I also didn't get 714 because it was too drying on my lips with the mega matte formula but I did enjoy the colour. Finally, I would recommend that you get some of the matching lip liners simply because it is often harder to match darker lipsticks and also helps with staying power and feathering. All their lip liners are a creamy texture so it is easy to apply and moisturizing.
Thank you so much for reading and I hope you can try out Gwen's bold lip colours for the Spring time!
